The Kimpton Family

Our particular Kimpton family had lived in the Midlands since the 1850's, initially in the village of Knowle, to the south east of Birmingham, and then in and around the city as the family grew in the early 20th century. Cousins lost track of each other as time went on, only to be reunited in the millennium year, when they discovered that their families had been living less than ten miles apart. Other branches of the family were traced to North America, with two brothers emigrating to Maryland, where they prospered. In the next generation, another two brothers, less fortunately, were sent to Canada as home-children, never knowing what happened to their family back home.

Before this, the Kimptons had lived in the City of London, where three generations had worked as Master Bakers on Fish Street Hill at the foot of the old London Bridge, just a stones throw from Pudding Lane, where the Great Fire was started in 1666. The first member of the family to travel to the capital was a William Kimpton, apprenticed as a baker in 1756. William's indenture read that he was the son of Edward Kimpton, mealman, of Hertford; and this information allowed us to research back even further. Eventually, we traced the family to the village of Barkway in Hertfordshire, where the Kimptons had been prosperous Yeoman farmers, holding land at Newsells, a small hamlet close to the village.

Marriage in the 17th century. Allegory of Marriage for Pleasure. From an engraving by Jan Saenredam. 1565-1607

This page lists the known descendants of Edward Kimpton  and Ann Harvey of Barkway, who married in 1637, the earliest confirmed date we have for our family history so far. The list of surnames below are links to a page showing the full list of individuals, and clicking on those links will in turn bring up a five generation pedigree chart (family tree) showing their place in the tree. Since this is a rather selfishly Kimpton descent chart, most of the other surnames listed only show information for a single individual who married into the Kimpton line, not their whole family tree. However, if anyone here is your own ancestor, please email me using the link below - we may have a lot more information which it wasn't possible to put on this page!

All of the information contained in these pages is based on my own research, or information I have been able to verify personally.  A great deal of work was carried out by Clare Ellis (AGRA), who put up with my badgering her to carry on rummaging in the archives at Hertfordshire CRO with much more patience than I would have had. It was Clare who made the link between the London family and the Kimptons of Barkway. For the USA I owe a great deal to the late Bill Garner of Maryland, an amateur genealogist and great friend who  provided us with a wealth of information on the family of Thomas Soden Kimpton. However, mistakes can happen, so If you find any inaccuracies or transcription errors, please let me know.
